Better Future Project accelerates the growth of a powerful grassroots movement to address the climate crisis and make stronger, healthier, and more resilient communities by advancing a rapid and responsible transition beyond fossil fuels.
Better Future Project was founded in January 2011 by a student leader, a community leader, and a faith leader to combine their various constituencies together into a powerful, unified movement. Having collaborated across their separate spheres, they decided there was a need for a new organization that would bring these different communities together, and work across silos to engage other stakeholders in this important work. We recognize that there are many, many reasons to move beyond fossil fuels – health, security, and justice foremost among them – and we seek out any and all partners who share our goals, even if we are primarily motivated by different values.
Our boards and staff reflect the diversity of our cause: we are architects and religious leaders, business executives and military veterans, lawyers and scientists, justice activists and health professionals. We are united in our belief that we need to rapidly and responsibly stop burning fossil fuels and build a better future for us all.
We believe that there is only one way to achieve the better future we are working toward – to accelerate the growth of a social movement powerful enough to build the better future we all want and deserve. We focus on empowering, connecting, and activating leaders in this movement, working across and bringing together key constituencies.
How we build the movement:
Every movement needs strong leadership. We work to develop young student leaders through our summer leadership development programs (Climate Summer and Ride for the Future), which train and empower dozens of new student leaders each year. Alumni of our programs have gone on to become campus sustainability leaders, found a city-wide student climate network in Chicago, and become leaders in the fights against natural gas fracking and Tar Sands development.
We also provide organizing workshops to faith, student, and community leaders and are looking to develop a community fellowship program.
- 350 Massachusetts
- 350 New England
- Mother’s Out Front
- Students for a Just and Stable Future* (*not a Better Future Project)
We help to bring together our diverse constituencies through networks, providing support, structure, and staffing to the 350 Massachusetts network and playing a leading role in the development of 350 New England. We also have a formal relationship with the student-led Students for a Just and Stable Future (which was co-founded by our E.D. when he was in graduate school) and provide the network with various types of support. In addition, we are organizing mothers as distinct constituency and bringing them together through Mother’s Out Front.
Better Future Project runs and supports a number of campaigns, including supporting students pushing for the divestment of university endowments from fossil fuels as part of the Fossil Free campaign, in partnership with 350.org and others, moving Massachusetts beyond coal as a leading member of the Coal Free Massachusetts coalition, preventing the expansion of natural gas infrastructure in Massachusetts, and keeping tar sands pipelines and tar sands oil out of the Northeast (and engaging in the national fight around the Keystone XL Pipeline).
