By now, you probably know the drill: sign an online petition against the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline, get an auto-responder mail, forward it to friends, call it a day. But this time, it's not quite that simple.
We're in the fight of our lives. We need to stop further development of the tar sands, or risk climate catastrophe. But Big Oil reigns in Washington, and our national leaders simply aren't listening.
Instead of making another stand in the halls of Congress, or at the gates of the White House, we think it's time to bring this fight home.
Without action, 18% of Massachusetts' oil could come from the tar sands within just a few years. Our state leaders need to ban tar sands oil now -- and there's a real chance that Governor Patrick might take the first steps during his final weeks in office.
Strong action by Patrick would set a crucial precedent for incoming governor Charlie Baker and provide a much-needed nudge to President Obama.
We're collecting thousands of offline and online petitions in the next two weeks telling Governor Patrick to ban tar sands. (Sign the postcard here -- and please forward it to five friends.) We’ll deliver the postcards on December 11. And we’ll see where it goes from there: one way or another, we will keep organizing to keep the tar sands out of Massachusetts.
We’ll deliver the postcards to Governor Patrick’s staff on December 11. RSVP here if you think you might be able to make it!
